Southside Styling // Birmingham
Last July, Whitman Wilde got in touch to see if Fern House wanted to work alongside them on adding a key styling package to an exciting commercial project that was ongoing in Birmingham.
Whitman Wilde are an architectural practice who had been working on the development and refurbishment of an outdated office space in central Birmingham. The new vision for the building was to act as a creative community hub, with flexible work spaces for individuals or start ups. There was to be a new reception space to which welcomed visitors into the building, and open plan work spaces and board rooms on the first floor.
The client set out a clear brief for the visual impact of the styling. Southside is located in an urban and gritty part of the city, so the aim was to have spaces that reflected the vibrancy and energy that can be found there. Playful spaces with bold and bright accents would help this building to feel full of life and opportunity.
Whilst adding accessories and styling to a space may feel like an easy after thought, it can be overlooked as a key design tool to get the most out of your original design vision. If it is planned carefully and the location of different objects, art and plants are mapped out then it will give the finishing touches that makes a space feel complete, whilst also adding a coherence that reinforces the original design language.
The styling palette here relies upon bold textures and block colours throughout, modern forms that have playful curves and shapes, large leafed plants in concrete pots, graphic prints and magazines with modern cultural themes, and lastly bespoke photography which highlights the masterful graffiti that adorns the neighborhood.
